It is worth being precise about what one of these machines actually does, because the word robot makes people picture an arm and stop there.

A cow walks into a stall of her own accord, drawn by feed at the far end. A photocell registers her and the gate closes behind. A tag on her ear, neck or ankle identifies her, and the system makes its first decision: if she has been milked too recently, a gate opens and she is sent back out without being milked at all.
