One company in the Netherlands makes the machines that make every advanced AI chip. Today it said demand is so strong it is booked into 2028.

There is a single company, in a single Dutch town, without which the entire artificial intelligence boom does not happen. It is called ASML, and this morning it gave the clearest reading yet of how fast that boom is still moving.

ASML reported second-quarter sales of 9.3 billion euros, ahead of expectations, and raised its forecast for the year to between 43 and 45 billion euros, up sharply from its earlier range. It did so, it said, because of AI. Its chief executive told investors the order book is close to full for 2027 and already filling for 2028, and that the company is racing to add roughly a third more capacity to keep up.

Here is why that matters more than a good quarter for a European share. ASML is the only maker in the world of extreme ultraviolet lithography, the room-sized machines that print the circuits on the most advanced AI chips. Not the leading maker. The only one. Every cutting-edge chip that runs a large AI model, in an American data centre or a British one, begins on a machine that exists nowhere else. When ASML says it is booked into 2028, it is telling you the length of the queue for the single most important tool in the industry, and the queue is years long.

Now bring it home, because this is where Britain's AI ambitions meet the floor. The whole national pitch, the Growth Zones, the data centres, the talk of being an AI maker and not a taker, assumes access to these chips. Britain makes none of the machines that make them, and buys the chips themselves from a supply chain it does not control at any point. Worse, the one lever over that chain sits in Washington, not London. American export rules already shape what ASML may sell and to whom, a US law to tighten its China sales is working through Congress now, and in June this year the reach of those rules was shown in the sharpest possible way, when Washington briefly cut off British access to a frontier AI model at a stroke.

That last episode should be disclosed plainly, because it touches us directly. The AI models that write this newspaper are built by Anthropic, the company whose systems were pulled from British users for those weeks in June. We are reporting on the length of a leash we are also on.

None of this is an argument against Britain building. It is an argument for honesty about what the building rests on. A country can pour money into data centres and call it sovereignty, but the machines inside them are made by one firm abroad, from chips it cannot make, under rules it does not write. Today ASML told the world the demand is real and the wait is long. The useful British question is not how loud our ambition is. It is where we are standing in that queue, and who gets to move us.
