The word "computer" is older than the machine by more than three hundred years. Its first known appearance in English is from 1613, in a book by the writer Richard Brathwait, where it means simply a person who computes. For most of the time since, that is what it was: a job title, held by skilled people — a great many of them women — whose scarce and valuable ability was to calculate.
